The Memorial Hospital in Craig was recently recognized as one of the best places to work in health care, according to a leading hospital publication.

Becker’s Hospital Review, published nine times a year with a circulation of about 18,500, provides business and legal news and analysis geared toward high-level officials in the health care industry.

The publication’s “100 Great Places to Work in Healthcare” is published annually and recognizes healthcare institutions around the country that demonstrate excellence in providing robust benefits, wellness initiatives, professional development opportunities and workplace atmosphere.

For the first time ever, TMH made the annual list.

“It’s just great recognition and a nice honor for the hospital,” said Jennifer Riley, THM chief of organizational excellence.

“It recognizes that the benefits and compensation for our employees is among some of the best and we hope our employees feel the same.”

TMH currently employs 200 staff members and nine physicians, making it one of the largest non-energy employers in Moffat County.

In addition to being recognized by Becker’s, TMH was honored in February by the Craig Chamber of Commerce as the 2011 Large Business of the Year.

The annual Chamber awards not only recognize local businesses and individuals for professional success, but also contributions to the community.

TMH employees participate, or take the lead in, almost every volunteer, fundraising and community event in Craig, Riley said.

Employees contribute annually to the Moffat County United Way fundraiser and the hospital sponsors events such as Diamonds and Spurs, Cowboy Christmas, and the Moffat County Fair.

Hospital officials were also instrumental in bringing the Colorado State Barbecue Championships to Craig.

“During all of our employee orientations, George (Rohrich, TMH chief executive officer) introduces his philosophy of working hard, but also having fun,” Riley said.

In addition to community participation, TMH executives make good on that promise by holding an annual employee barbecue, quarterly cook-offs, pancake breakfasts served by administration during Hospital Week and annual parties.

Riley believes satisfied employees play a major role in TMH’s reputation as a quality health care provider.

“Without a doubt,” she said. “We have to have an engaged and happy workforce to continue to provide great care and continue moving forward.”
