The Memorial Hospital in Craig announced Tuesday it is opening commercial kitchen space for community use.

The Memorial Hospital Community Kitchen is located at 750 Russell St., and consists of commercial ovens, a stove, a refrigerator and freezer, a steam table, and workspace.

Individuals, businesses and organizations may rent the 588-square-foot kitchen and adjoining 1088-square-foot dining room for a fee of $15 per hour for a minimum of three hours.

Renters will be expected to bring their own cooking supplies and utensils.

George Rohrich, TMH chief executive officer, said repurposing the kitchen has been a vision of his since the hospital moved to 750 Hospital Loop.

"Ever since we moved the hospital to the new location west of town, I have wanted to repurpose the kitchen at the old facility," Rohrich said in a news release. "The kitchen is well equipped, and not putting it back into service seemed like a waste.

"This is the right thing to do for the community."

In addition to the hourly fee, TMH will require renters to put down a $150 refundable cleaning deposit and sign a facility use agreement.

Rohrich and Jennifer Riley, TMH chief of organizational excellence, presented the Moffat County Commission with a draft facility use agreement Tuesday, which was approved 3-0.

Commissioner Audrey Danner said she believes the community kitchen may fuel local residents with the entrepreneurial spirit.

"I can see a lot of people using the kitchen to cook things that they will sell in the community," Danner said. "Maybe a little here and a little there as (nest) egg money."

Rohrich and Riley said they are also working with Colorado Northwestern Community College to provide cooking classes.

Mark Stanczak, TMH executive chef, will be the instructor.

"Opening this kitchen is exciting," Stanczak said in the release. "I enjoy teaching others about cooking and now there is a fantastic space to utilize."

Details about the cooking classes are still to be determined, Riley said.

Rohrich said he envisions the kitchen seeing a variety of uses from residents cooking large holiday meals for the family to businesses utilizing the dining space for gatherings.
