After a one-year hiatus, veterans will once again benefit from an event at Thunder Rolls Bowling Center this Veteran's Day.
The local bowling alley, 900 Industrial Lane, hosted a Bowl for Veterans event in 2010 to raise money for the non-profit charity organization Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL) and was successful.
The nearly $3200 raised by the alley that day was the ninth-most by a 16-lane bowling alley in the country.
But according to Thunder Rolls employee Chris Runyan, the turnout was not as good as hoped.
"The one two years ago was successful mainly because of the bowlers, not the community," she said. "We had something really big like this (year) and had maybe 40 people come."
That discouraged Thunder Rolls from holding an event last year, but this Sunday it is coming back with a vengeance.
The Bowl for Veterans will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at Thunder Rolls and will feature a variety of activities and prizes to keep bowlers, veterans and the community engaged.
There will be prizes for bowling strikes when certain pins (red, blue and star) are in a given lane, as well as door prizes every half hour. A raffle of freedom bowling balls and Orange Crush pins will also take place.
In addition, veterans will be at Thunder Rolls all afternoon to interact with those who attend.
Proceeds from Bowl for Veterans will benefit BVL, which provides veterans with sports, recreation and arts opportunities to aid in recuperation and enjoyment.
Runyan is hoping a large turnout of locals will help to make Sunday a special one in Craig.
"We just really want this community to come together and come thank our vets and contribute to this BVL," she said. "I think it's important that we let them all know how much we appreciate (what they do)."
Runyan stressed that people did not have to attend for the entire four hours, or even bowl, but walking in and saying hello would make a difference.
"They don't have to come the entire time," she said. "They can just show up whenever. Even if they don't want to come to bowl, if they'll just come down and visit with the vets, maybe make a small donation as well, that's great."
