Thrift store seeking food drive contributions
December 10, 2013
You give a little, you get a little. That's the ideal expressed by a new Craig business this holiday season.
The new secondhand store in town, The Warehouse, 124 W. Victory Way, is encouraging customers to bring in canned foods and other nonperishable items as part of its collection for the Inter-Faith Food Bank of Craig.
The shop — full name The Warehouse of Resale Furnishings — will be working in tandem with Elbe Gray's Thrift Store to assist the process of feeding the less fortunate of the area.
Owner Curtis Lorio said that part of his incentive for everyone who contributes is to offer discounts on his inventory. He also will be keeping track of the amount of food people bring in, giving out several prizes in the weeks to come to those who donate the most.
"We want to be able to help with the food baskets with the food bank," he said. "It all goes to a great cause. There's nothing better than giving back to your community."
Providing good opportunities for people in the area is why Lorio set up The Warehouse in the first place.
Opening its doors downtown about a month ago — after an attempt to revamp former business Charlotte's Web — the store sells mostly furniture and other home items. Lorio said he wanted to offer something similar to his mother, Heather, who owns Elbe Gray's, but with less emphasis on things like clothing.
“It's a lot more specialized for people who are starting homes, and I get a lot of people who have just moved here," he said. "While I was in college, I studied patterns of socioeconomic development in rural Colorado and saw there's a big gap for secondhand stores."
Although the clientele already has showed their interest in his shop, Lorio said he is less concerned with seeing a lot of profit than in providing a worthwhile outlet for the people of Craig.
"It's about giving back, which is something my mom embodies in her store, and I try to attribute that into mine," he said.
