There's still time to register for a locally offered Colorado Northwestern Community College class about financial management for teens.

The class runs from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, starting today, through Aug. 3 at the Hayden Public Library. The cost is $50.

Sara Magas, the elementary and middle school counselor with the Hayden School District, is teaching the class.

Magas studied financial management in college and used to work for a bank. She said the class includes instruction about creating a savings plan, balancing a checkbook, the importance of credit and managing credit. Magas said she also will talk with students about the process of obtaining grants and college scholarships, in addition to future plans and career choices.

She said it's important for teens to understand personal finance.

"I feel that it's important for teens because, as a society, we have a great amount of debt," Magas said. "If kids can learn at any early age to avoid having a substantial amount of debt, it will be that much easier for them as they get older."

Magas said some of the topics she would discuss in the Financial Management for Teens class are touched on in the Hayden School District, which is trying to add a more comprehensive course about financial management.

The class is geared toward teens but open to all ages, said Lindsay Giessinger, Hayden Center Coordinator for CNCC. She also said there is no cap on the number of students who can attend.

To register for the class, go to the Hayden Public Library between 3 and 3:30 p.m. today. Participants don't need to pay for the class today. CNCC will bill students later.

The Financial Management for Teens class is part of CNCC's community education courses, Giessinger said.

"We offer a variety of classes for teens, adults and children each month," she said.

Magas also is teaching a family finance workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and July 22. The cost is $50. She said the workshop would address ways families could save and invest money and the basic skills they need to maximize their income tax returns.

CNCC is offering several different classes throughout the summer. Classes include physical fitness, computer technology, arts and crafts, personal interest and sign language, in addition to classes for teens and children.

The community college also is offering several virtual classes beginning in fall.
