Eryn Leonard completes a practice lap Thursday at the Moffat County High School pool. Leonard and her teammates will participate in the Moffat County Invitational starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at MCHS, 900 Finley Lane.

— With this weekend's Moffat County Invitational swim meet coming up, coach Anita Reynolds said the community has a chance to see progress in action.

The team is coming off a seventh-place finish at the Dec. 12 Glenwood Springs Invite, and Reynolds said the team has improved every time it has been in the water.

"They were awesome," she said. "They finished seventh out of 14 teams, so they were right in the middle."

Reynolds said the team will look to improve more at home.

The swim meet will start at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Moffat County High School pool, 900 Finley Lane.

"We hope to fill the pool area and get a lot of support for the girls," Reynolds said. "We're hoping to get another swimmer qualified for state, and we're definitely looking to improve on our times."

Reynolds said the swimmers were performing in mid-season form.

"Everybody improved their times, and (diver) Genna Bradley qualified for state," she said. "Out of her 11 dives, she scored 350.15 points."

Bradley wasn't the only diver who impressed last week in Glenwood Springs.

"Larissa (Grammer), our freshmen diver, placed second out of 13 divers," Reynolds said. "She did amazing."

It wasn't just the divers who performed well, Reynolds added.

"The relays were good, and they are really coming along," she said. "We only had one disqualification, and that was for a turn that wasn't quite up to par."

There also were several good individual performances, Reynolds said.

"Eryn Leonard is within a second for qualifying for her events for state," she said. "Everybody else is right up there, and by the end of the season, I see at least three more qualifying."

The team has only two seniors, Bradley and Tasha Romney, but the young swimmers such as Leonard, Mary Penner and Grammer have been promising in the early season.

"They have come miles," Reynolds said of the team's young swimmers. "I have a couple of new beginner swimmers doing good, strong JV workouts. They are getting there."

This weekend will be a smaller swim meet.

"Central and Palisade, which is a combination team, will be here," Reynolds said.

"I believe they will bring six divers from Fruita and Glenwood, just to get more exposure."
