A cool Pacific breeze will be blowing through Craig this weekend.

Craig Fire/Rescue will host the 71st annual Firefighter's Ball on Saturday evening at The O.P. Bar & Grill, 534 E. Victory Way.

Running from 6 p.m. to midnight, the event carries a Hawaiian luau theme.

The night of tropic-themed entertainment will include a costume contest for the best island garb, limbo dancing, music by disc jockey Mason Siedschlaw and more. O.P. owners Delbert and Diana Knez will provide a spread of food and beverages, complete with a burger bar and two bars dispensing alcohol for the crowd.

Attendees must be 21 or older to attend.

Tickets cost $10, a fee that does not include the additional cost of food and drinks.

But, Craig Fire/Rescue Chief Bill Johnston said the money taken in by the event, which sees about 300 people each year, will go toward a worthy cause.

The event benefits a scholarship fund for local students, specifically those interested in pursuing a career in emergency services, such as fire prevention or health services.

"It's very important to us," Johnston said.

Johnston said the department has raised an average of about $2,000 per year to provide to Moffat County High School students. All students are able to apply for the funds, though preference is given to those who are involved in, or plan to get involved in, the field.

The fire department has continued using the luau theme since 2006 as a more casual approach to the usually formal festivities, though the Firefighter's Ball went through a bigger change in its name before it got a new motif.

"There's about 100 years of tradition in it being called a 'Fireman's Ball,' and we only recently changed that to 'Firefighter's,'" he said.

Johnston said that, regardless of the name, it's "always a pretty fun time."

Tickets for the luau are available at the Craig Fire Station, by calling 824-5914 or through any Craig Fire/Rescue firefighter.
