Superintendent of Schools backs proposed ordinance
July 5, 2001
To the Editor;
I fully support the idea of the City Council passing an ordinance that would prohibit the possession of and use of tobacco by minors. I will agree to be involved in a task force meeting to develop such an ordinance to present to the City Council.
I believe that with this ordinance we may not only limit the use of tobacco but may also have an impact on the use of marijuana. Statistics show that a greater percentage of kids who start smoking at an early age will also participate in the use of marijuana. If we can have an ordinance that prohibits the use of tobacco we may indirectly curtail some of the use of marijuana.
