November 22, 2000
Students at East Elementary School received awards Monday for the spectacular amount of candles they sold as a fund-raiser for playground equipment. Students raised more than $7,600 $3,000 more than they raised last year. The top sellers were Tiara Boyle, Nancy Gutierrez and Robert Baker. Boyle received a bicycle and helment for earning $1,533, Gutierrez won a Gameboy for earning $1,062 and Baker won a scooter for earning $921. Above, Baker looks over his new scooter. Home Interiors Associate Debbie Garouthe, right, East Elementary School Principal Guy Gladden and teacher Bret Sperl present the prize. Sperl was given an award because his was the only class with 100 percent participation in the fund-raiser. Above, Gladden presents students with a bag of goodies. Students who sold at least 20 candles got a bag.
