According to county officials, the space could support a 15,200-square-foot building footprint and expanded parking.

The Steamboat Springs City Council wants to discuss the prospect of a shared public safety facility with the Routt County Board of County Commissioners at a joint meeting next month.

The council also wants the citizens committee that is advocating for the shared facility to continue meeting and identify a plan B for a standalone police station.

The council does not want to be left without an alternative should the city and county not pursue a shared facility.

In the meantime, City Manager Deb Hinsvark will be talking with county officials about the potential for the facility.

A shared public safety facility on the west end of town next to the Routt County Jail is currently the top choice for most members of the city’s police station committee if the facility can be accomplished and designed cooperatively.

Earlier this week, the committee asked a local architect to create a conceptual design for the site.

The conceptual plans should give the committee and the public a better idea of what such a facility could look like, and how programming could be laid out.

Routt County Commissioner Tim Corrigan told the Steamboat Today last week that he and his fellow commissioners are supportive of the concept of a shared facility, but he worried the city’s needs for a new police facility are more immediate than the need for expanded facilities for the Routt County Sheriff’s Office.

He said the commissioners would have to weigh the facility against several other pressing capital needs in the county.

He also wanted to know how much money could be saved by combining facilities with the city.
