Sports briefs: Volleyball skills camp begins Monday

The Moffat County High School girls volleyball team will participate in a skills camp from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

The camps, which are for incoming freshmen and older players, will be at MCHS, 900 Finley Lane.

The camp is free.

MCHS golf season begins Aug. 9

The Moffat County High School boys varsity golf season will have its first practice at 7 a.m. Aug. 9 at Yampa Valley Golf Course, 2179 Highway 394.

Coach Ken Harjes asks that all players have physicals completed before the first practice, and to bring their clubs to practice.

The team's first tournament is Aug. 16 at Bookcliff Golf Course in Grand Junction.

First-round Legion match-ups released

The American Legion state tournament will begin at 1 p.m. today when No. 4 seed Strasburg plays No. 5 seed Steamboat Springs at Craig Middle School, 915 Yampa Ave.

No. 7 seed Moffat County will play at 4 p.m. against No. 2 seed Fleming, also at the middle school.

At 7 p.m., the last of the day's games will conclude when No. 3 seed Eagle Valley plays No. 6 seed Fort Morgan.

Rangely, the No. 1 seed, will have a first-round bye.

The games are free and open to the public.

The tournament ends Sunday.

Community slated to honor retired coach

Former Moffat County High School basketball players, fellow coaches, and community members are invited to honor former coach Craig Mortensen.

There will be a celebration of Mortensen's 30-plus years as head coach of the boys and girls basketball teams at 5 p.m. Aug. 7 at Craig Middle School.

The event, which is open to the public, will include refreshments and an alumni pick-up basketball game.

Mortensen coached the boys team from 1976 to 1994, and the girls team from 1995 to 2010.

He retired in April after recording more than 500 career wins.
