Sports Briefs for May 9: Sheriff’s Office Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament slated

Sheriff’s Office Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament slated

After a one-year hiatus, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament returns June 9 to Yampa Valley Golf Course, 2179 Highway 394.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit Moffat County High School graduates.

The event, which was cancelled last year due to flooding, is in a 4-person scramble format. Players form their own teams.

The cost is $40 per person, plus greens fees for nonmembers.

Pro shop credits will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place teams for net and gross scores. In addition, prizes will be awarded in closest to the pin and straightest drive contests. Each player can also buy two mulligans, for a total of eight per team.

All skill levels are welcome and no handicap is necessary.

Entry forms are available at the golf course or by calling Rick Holford at 826-2308.

Baseball organizational meeting scheduled for tonight

Anyone interested in participating in a summer baseball league for high school age teens can attend an informational meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in the cafeteria of Craig Middle School, 915 Yampa Ave.

The meeting will gauge the amount of interest in the league, which is intended for players who will be starting their freshman year of high school in the fall or older. Players through the age of 18 are eligible.

For more information, call Frances Nielsen at 629-0774.

Annual bicycling activity set for May 19

The 26th annual “Where the Hell’s Maybell?” bike ride will take place May 19.

Participants have two options in departure locations and times — 7 a.m. from Northwest Storage, 4295 W. Highway 40, or 7:30 a.m. from Western Knolls.

Registration for the ride through Northwest Colorado is free. A breakfast of pancakes, bacon, eggs and orange juice is available at the end of the day’s activities for $6.

Commemorative t-shirts are $15.

For more information, call 826-2029.

Parks and Recreation soccer registration deadline Wednesday

Registration is open for Craig Parks and Recreation’s 2012 summer youth soccer program.

The program is available for players from ages 5 to 15 — as of Aug. 31. The participation fee is $30 for the summer and includes a team T-shirt. The deadline to register is Wednesday.

The season begins June 18 with practice sessions, and games are played Tuesdays and Thursdays at Woodbury Sports Complex through Aug. 2.

For more information about playing or volunteering as a coach, call 824-2029.
