Sports Briefs for May 2: Softball informational meeting scheduled for Thursday

Softball informational meeting scheduled for Thursday

A pre-season meeting for co-ed softball will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at Holiday Inn, 300 S. Colorado Highway 13.

The meeting is for those looking to get involved in the league over the summer and for existing teams to get paperwork out of the way.

Anyone older than age 14 is eligible to play. Each team must pay a $250 fee for the lights used at the fields.

Organizer Tanya Ferguson said an additional entry fee will be determined after the meeting.

“We had about 15 teams last year, so it depends on how many people are interested this year,” she said.

Ferguson said the season is tentatively scheduled to start May 29, running through August.

Local games will be played at Loudy-Simpson Park, 500 S. Ranney St. Some games may be played in Steamboat Springs, as well.

Sea Sharks to host registration Thursday

Registration for the Craig Sea Sharks swimming team’s summer program will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria at Craig Middle School, 915 Yampa Ave.

Open to ages 5 to 18, team swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool without stopping, touching the sides or receiving assistance from anyone.

Participants must also have a sense of commitment.

Sea Sharks board member Bonnie Hulstine said she is hoping to bring in swimmers from Craig as well as beyond to exceed last year’s 39 registered swimmers.

“We’ve had some calls from people from Baggs, (Wyo.), and so we’re looking at adding swimmers from there,” she said. “Hayden and Meeker are also communities without their own team, so this would be open to them too.”

Coaching this year are Meghan Francone, Anita Reynolds and Heather Vallem.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had three coaches, and we’re very lucky that they’re willing to give up their summer,” Hulstine said.

Swimmers will learn and practice the proper technique for the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle, which they will use in competitions throughout the summer.

Registration options include the silver team for $130 or gold team for $230.

Silver team practices twice weekly, while gold team hits the pool five days a week.

Practices begin at 4 p.m. May 21 at the Moffat County High School pool, 900 Finley Lane, and meets will begin in June.
