Sports briefs for July 23, 2011: Yampa River Junior Classic registration deadline today
July 23, 2011
The Yampa River Junior Classic golf tournament is set to tee off at 7:30 a.m. Monday at Yampa Valley Golf Course, 2179 Colorado Highway 394.
The tournament is for golfers 5 to 17 years old. Registration is $10 for players 9 and younger, and $15 for players 10 to 17.
The deadline to register is noon today.
Tee times will be posted at 9 a.m. Sunday at the golf course.
The 5- to 7-year-old group will play three holes, the 8- to 9-year-old group will play six holes, the 10- to 12-year-old group will play nine holes, and the 13- to 17-year-old group will play 18 holes.
Dave Desarmeaux, assistant professional and director of the event, said the tournament would compensate for any level of player.
"The event really helps the kids get a look at what a tournament setting is like for golf and to help expose them to the overall experience of competing in a tournament setting," Desarmeaux said.
After the tournament, the course is providing all participants with a free lunch and awards will be handed out at that time.
Golf course professional Jason Back said he expects between 40 and 50 players to attend.
"It is really the kids' day to come out during the summer and have some fun," he said. "I think that this will be another great event for parents to take their kids to and have a good time.
"We hope that the tournament will help inspire the kids to continue to keep on playing the sport and keep at it for the rest of their lives."
