Sports Briefs for Dec. 16, 2011: Annual Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot set for Saturday

The annual Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot will take place Saturday at Sandrock Elementary School, 201 E. Ninth St.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the event is free for all shooters. The competition begins at 9 a.m.
There are three age groups — 8- and 9-year-olds, 10- and 11-year-olds, and 12- and 13-year-olds.
The competition will consist of two rounds, with shooters shooting 10 free throws in the first round and 15 in the second round.
The shooter with the most free throws after 25 balls will win a trophy and advance to the district contest Jan. 22 at Rifle Elementary School, with a chance to advance to the state contest in February in Salida.
Event coordinator Frank Sadvar said anyone 8 to 13 years old should come and participate.

Trophies will be presented and food will be provided after the competition to all competitors and their families at the Craig Elks Lodge No. 1577, 43 W. Victory Way.

Chaparral's Dalton named volleyball POY
The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPNHS, announced Wednesday that Nicole Dalton of Chaparral High School has been named the 2011-12 Gatorade Colorado Volleyball Player of the Year.
Dalton is the state's returning Gatorade Colorado Volleyball Player of the Year and helped lead her team to a 31-0 record and a second consecutive Class 5A state championship.
This season, Dalton recorded 492 kills, 406 assists, 267 digs, 62 blocks and 54 aces.
Dalton is also a member of the U.S. Girls' Youth National team.
Dalton maintained a 3.28 grade point average in the classroom and has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for the University of Texas in the fall of 2012.
The senior is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year award to be announced later in December.
Register for 2012 Trailbusters
Trailbusters is now accepting registration for the 2012 season.
The program is put on by Craig Parks and Recreation and provides ski or snowboard lessons for youth 6 to 15 years old.
The program will take place Jan. 21 and 28 and Feb. 4, 11 and 25.
Registration is $295 with transportation provided. Lift tickets are $29 each day.
Ski and snowboard rentals are left up to the participant.
The deadline to register is Jan. 6.
