Shooting struggles plague MCHS girls in league home loss

Scott Schlaufman

The Moffat County High School girls varsity basketball team's seven-game winning streak came to an end Friday night at home against Delta.

The Bulldogs struggled offensively in the 42-39 loss, largely because good shots wouldn't fall.

MCHS coach Matt Ray couldn't explain his team's struggles for the night.

"For whatever reason, I can't put my finger on it, we just didn't shoot well today," Ray said. "Percent-wise, I don't even know if we shot 15 to 20 percent for the game."

In the first three quarters, the Bulldogs scored just six points away from the free throw line.

"They were all good shots, they weren't even rushed," Ray said. "We had the shot we wanted, it just didn't fall in. You can't do anything about that."

Instead, most of the MCHS offense came at the charity stripe.

The Bulldogs (13-7, 7-2 in WSL) trailed 20-10 at halftime. Many of those points came from senior Lauren Roberts, who scored all 14 of her team-leading points on free throws.

Nine of Moffat County's 11 points in the third quarter came from Roberts, who missed only one shot in her five trips to the line in the third.

She was aggressive on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor, but she battled foul trouble.

Just over a minute into the fourth quarter, she fouled out. Ensuing free throws by Delta's Jenni Jones gave the Panthers a nine-point lead.

But, the Bulldogs broke out of their shooting slump late in the fourth.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Lisa and Melissa Camilletti cut Delta's lead to 39-35.

"We started to work together more," Melissa Camilletti said. "We were like, 'We need to get into the game or it's the end of (our goal of) league champs.'"

With just over a minute left, Melissa Camilletti was able to hit a shot that made it 41-37 Delta (15-5, 8-2 in WSL).

Later, two free throws by Mikayla Camilletti made the score 42-39 with 38 seconds left.

The Bulldogs made four shots in the fourth quarter, one more than they did in the first three quarters total.

The Bulldogs had a chance for a tying shot at the buzzer, but weren't able to find an open shooter.
