Pair was stranded for the night in Powderwash Basin after rabbit hunting

Daily Press Staff

— Moffat County Search and Rescue officials have found a local man and woman who were stranded for a night in Powderwash Basin.

Jimmy Weber Jr., and Leona Backus had been missing since 10:30 a.m. Monday but were found at about 1 p.m. Tuesday.

A Search and Rescue official said Weber and Backus' truck broke down while the two were rabbit hunting.

"Thank God it wasn't as cold as it was a couple weeks ago," Moffat County Sheriff Tim Jantz said about the couple spending the night on a county road.

Kristy Miner, Search and Rescue lieutenant, said the couple hiked away from the truck Tuesday morning and were found on an unknown county road by a Halliburton truck driver.

They were not injured, Miner said, but they were transported to a clinic in Baggs, Wyo., for general heath checks.
