Saddle up for Freedom Hooves’ Saturday Poker Ride in Moffat County

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

Therapeutic horseback riding program Freedom Hooves will host its third annual Poker Ride Saturday morning at Duffy Mountain south of Lay in Moffat County.

Freedom Hooves will host its third annual Horseback Poker Ride on Saturday morning at Moffat County's Duffy Mountain, south of Lay.

Registration for the day of riding begins at 8 a.m. at a kiosk off Moffat County Road 17, and eager equestrians will hit the trail at 9 a.m.

The regular route is about 11 miles long through Bureau of Land Management property. Those wishing to take a shorter, five-mile course can begin at 11 a.m.

"I'd be surprised if anyone wants to do the five miles," organizer Joan Heinz said, noting that most riders want to take their animals the full stretch.

Riders will visit five stations during the day, where they will receive a playing card to make up a poker hand, with prizes available for the best combinations.

Initial registration is $30 for adults or $15 for those younger than 18. Additional cards can be purchased for $5 each to improve one's hand.
