In regard to the "Catch a Pig Contest," many children who have dreamed for years of running, laughing and falling in the mud trying to catch a pig were turned away at the gate after standing for hours in line. There were tears of disappointment, not only in our children, but also in the adults. When we have taught fairness and the opportunity for each child to participate in a game or contest, not just a select few, only the first 20 were permitted to enter. This was not advertised in the Moffat County Fair pamphlet or the Craig Daily Press.
The magic and excitement of the fair was crushed in the hearts of our children. What exactly would it have hurt to let 15 or 20 more kids, with parents ready to pay the $5 entry fee, participate?
Have you forgotten when you were a child and life was full of dreams and hope, when an adult kept his or her word? You are the child of yesterday; the children turned away will be the adult of tomorrow.
In the future, we look forward to a change that will include every child with no one left out, to be part of the fair and participate.
