Rig Count for Jan. 7, 2012

A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Jan. 6, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:

• Colorado has 77 rigs online — the same as Dec. 29, 2011, and 13 more than Jan. 7, 2011.

• Wyoming has 55 rigs online — 1 less than Dec. 29, 2011, but 8 more than Jan. 7, 2011.

• The U.S. has 2,007 rigs online — the same as Dec. 29, 2011, and 307 more than Jan. 7, 2011.

Of those rigs:

— 1,948 are working on land, 17 in inland waters, and 42 offshore.

— 1,191 are drilling for oil, 811 for natural gas.

— 216 wells are directional, 1,160 are horizontal, and 631 are vertical.

As of the close of trading Thursday:

• Crude oil closed at $101.81 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

• Colorado southeast crude oil closed at $89.25 a barrel.

• Colorado Western crude oil closed at $86.33 a barrel.

• Wyoming sweet crude oil closed at $85.06 a barrel.

• The national average price for natural gas closed at $2.98 per 10,000 million British thermal units or MMBtu.
