Rig Count for Jan. 21, 2012

A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Jan. 20, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:

• Colorado has 73 rigs online — 2 more than Jan. 13, and 11 more than Jan. 21, 2011.

• Wyoming has 51 rigs online — 4 more than Jan. 13, and 5 more than Jan. 21, 2011.

• The U.S. has 2,008 rigs online — 21 more than Jan 13, and 295 more than Jan. 21, 2011.

Of those rigs:

— 1,947 are working on land, 16 in inland waters, and 45 offshore.

— 1,223 are drilling for oil, 780 for natural gas.

— 206 wells are directional, 1,183 are horizontal, and 619 are vertical.

As of the close of trading Thursday:

• Crude oil closed at $100.39 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

• Colorado Southeast crude oil closed at $88 a barrel.

• Colorado Western crude oil closed at $85.08 a barrel.

• Wyoming Sweet crude oil closed at $85.75 a barrel.

• The national average price for natural gas closed at $2.32 per 10,000 million British thermal units or MMBtu.
