Rig count for Jan. 14, 2012

A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Jan. 13, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:

• Colorado has 71 rigs online — 6 less than Jan. 6, but 8 more than Jan. 14, 2011.

• Wyoming has 47 rigs online — 8 less than Jan. 6, but 1 more than Jan. 14, 2011.



• The U.S. has 1,987 rigs online — 20 less than Jan 6, but 287 more than Jan. 14, 2011.

Of those rigs:



— 1,929 are working on land, 15 in inland waters, and 43 offshore.

— 1,191 are drilling for oil, 791 for natural gas.

— 213 wells are directional, 1,161 are horizontal, and 613 are vertical.

As of the close of trading Thursday:

• Crude oil closed at $99.10 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

• Colorado southeast crude oil closed at $86.50 a barrel.

• Colorado Western crude oil closed at $83.58 a barrel.

• Wyoming sweet crude oil closed at $84.50 a barrel.

• The national average price for natural gas closed at $2.69 per 10,000 million British thermal units or MMBtu.
