Rig Count for Feb. 4, 2012

A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Feb. 3, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:

• Colorado has 72 rigs online — 1 more than Jan. 27, and 8 more than Feb. 4, 2011.

• Wyoming has 49 rigs online — 1 more than Jan. 27, and 2 more than Feb. 4, 2011.

• The U.S. has 1,997 rigs online — 11 less than Jan. 27, and 258 more than Feb. 4, 2011.

Of those rigs:

— 1,938 are working on land, 17 in inland waters, and 42 offshore.

— 1,245 are drilling for oil, 745 for natural gas.

— 217 wells are directional, 1,174 are horizontal, and 606 are vertical.

As of the close of trading Thursday:

• Crude oil closed at $96.36 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

• Colorado Southeast crude oil closed at $84 a barrel.

• Colorado Western crude oil closed at $81.08 a barrel.

• Wyoming Sweet crude oil closed at $78.11 a barrel.

• The national average price for natural gas closed at $2.55 per 10,000 million British thermal units or MMBtu.
