Public meeting to inform Craig residents of sexually violent predator

The Moffat County Sheriff's Office is scheduled to host a community meeting next week in Craig to provide the public with information concerning "the release of a sexually violent predator into this community," according to a news release.

The public meeting is pursuant to Colorado law, the sheriff's office reported.

"The goal of the meeting is to enhance the public's safety and protection," the sheriff's office stated in the release. "Vigilantism, or use of this information to harass, threaten or intimidate any of the following people is criminal behavior and will not be tolerated: the offender, the offender's significant others and the community notification team."

The offender has been convicted of a sexual offense that requires law enforcement registration, according to the release.

The offender has also been determined to present a high potential to re-offend and is therefore subject to community notification regarding residence in the community.

The sheriff's office reported that it has no legal authority to direct where a sex offender may live.

"Unless court restrictions exist, (offenders) are constitutionally free to live wherever they choose," according to the release. "Sex offenders have always lived in our communities, but they were not required to notify law enforcement of their residence until registration laws were implemented pursuant to the Jacob Wetterling Act in 1994.

"Law enforcement may now share that information with members of their communities, and in case of sexually violent predators, law enforcement must actively notify citizens."

Due to the "mature content" of information at the meeting, the sheriff's office recommends residents not bring children.

"It is strongly encouraged that the appropriate SVP information and public safety information presented be reviewed with children after the meeting. Parents are discouraged from bringing children under 15 years of age."
