Grand Futures Prevention Coalition and the Moffat County Partners are sponsoring a program to help strengthen one of the most powerful deterrents to drug and alcohol abuse parents.
A presentation put together by the Craig Police Department and the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office will be presented Tuesday night in Craig. The program will cover various drugs, warning signs of abuse, and new trends in use and how parents can work to keep their children from abusing drugs and alcohol.
The main goal is to educate parents on what is happening and what they need to be aware of today with drugs, said Kent Nielson, senior director of Grand Futures.
“[This] week is Red Ribbon Week, and one of our goals is to offer information and safety tips for parents in Craig,” he said. “The presentation will cover what to look for and what to be aware of for drug and alcohol abuse. We want to educate the parents and the public on these issues.”
The presentation is free, and will be an interactive one, with a question and answer session. Refreshments will be served. The entire program should last about an hour and a half, Nielson said.
A lot of parents just are not aware of what their kids are doing, or what some of the signs that could tell them what is going on are, Deb Landoll, executive director of Partners, said.
“Parents think their children aren’t doing drugs because they aren’t finding pills or something that obvious, and that’s not the case,” Landoll said. “Kids are smart, and they hide it all so well. This program is about informing the parents on what is happening, and what some signs are that their kids are involved with drugs.”
Part of the program will cover what common household items are now involved with drug abuse, Landoll said.
The presentation will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Holiday Inn of Craig. For more information, contact Moffat County Partners at 826-4261, or Grand Futures at 824-5752.
