Pregnancy Center fundraiser in Craig offers desserts, artwork

Yampa Valley Pregnancy Center will host a Dessert Night Sunday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, a silent auction fundraiser that includes the works of artist Susan Chermack, whose painting is shown.

The people of Craig will have a lot to chew on this weekend.

Yampa Valley Pregnancy Center will host a Dessert Night fundraiser Sunday evening at St. Michael's Catholic Church. The event will feature a plethora of delectable dishes, some readily available for ticket-holders and others reserved for the lucky few who want to bid on them during a silent auction.

Pregnancy Center Director Katie Grobe said offering up a selection of tasty treats like cookies, cakes and more made perfect sense to bring everyone together for a good cause.

Another element of the Dessert Night will be guest speaker Susan Chermack, of Salida, who will be adding her paintings into the auction inventory.

A commissioned artist and a certified oil painting instructor since 1991, Chermack's mural work has appeared on the walls of the United States Air Force Academy, as well as projects with U.S. Naval Academy, Whidbey Island Naval Base and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

One of her favorite images to include in paintings is the majestic eagle, she said.

Chermack, also a speaker for faith-based women's organization Stonecroft Ministries, said she loves being able to work with groups like YVPC that do work she views as very important.

Chermack's speech, "Just One," sums up her feelings about the services provided by YVPC, which offers counseling, supplies and more to expectant women, many of whom are without resources.

On numerous occasions, Chermack has shared the story of her daughter, a survivor of rape, who, upon learning she was pregnant, decided against abortion. Chermack said she was strongly supportive of this choice and hopes she can express to others in similar situations what kind of bearing it can have.

"There's so much evil in the world today, so if it just helps just one, if we all start with something somewhere and help someone, then the world starts getting to be a better place," Chermack said.
