Plane salvage delayed
June 11, 2001
MEEKER, Colo. (AP) Federal investigators say it could be days before they begin to salvage the wreckage of a plane found at the bottom of a lake with four Nevada men aboard.
Federal law prohibits military helicopters from assisting in the recovery, and civilian helicopters properly equipped for the job are not available, National Transportation Safety Board investigator Norm Wiemeyer said.
The wreckage was found Monday in about 45 feet of water in the middle of Upper Marvine Lake in the Flattops Wilderness Area. The Piper Cherokee had been missing since May 29.
The 80-acre lake is at 9,300 feet, about 23 miles east of Meeker and 135 miles west of Denver. There is no road access.
