Phone scam targets YVEA customers

Yampa Valley Electric Association is warning its customers in Northwest Colorado about a phone scam that has targeted some customers in Craig.

Someone posing as the electric cooperative has reportedly called customers in Craig and demanded they provide a credit card number to pay their electric bill within 30 minutes, or their service would be shut off.

YVEA spokeswoman Tammi McKenzie said the electric cooperative does not make calls of this nature, and members should not give out their credit card information on the phone.

McKenzie said most of the calls associated with the scam have originated in Craig, but YVEA is advising all of its customers about the calls in the event the scam spreads.

This isn’t the first time scammers have tried to pose as YVEA to get money from customers.

In 2013, scammers contacted residents and businesses and threatened to disrupt their electric service if they did not buy a MoneyPak prepaid card.
