As the sun started to set, the last rays of light shined on the baseball fields at Loudy-Simpson Park.

The grass, which was blanketed a week earlier by mid-May snow showers, was green, cut and ready for another season under the lights.

As players took the field, it signaled that summer is close, and baseball and softball are here.

Craig Park and Recreation's little league, softball, T-ball and coach-pitch seasons started Tuesday night, as players of all ages headed to the diamond for the first time since last summer.

"I'm just looking for the kids to learn and have fun," said Brad King, who coaches players 8 to 11 on a girls softball team sponsored by Airtek.

King said his team, which has several new players this year, had about four practices before starting the season.

Opposing King's team Tuesday was a softball team from Hayden that was sponsored by Mountain West Insurance and coached by Julie Skufca.

Regardless of the score at the end of the game, Skufca said she is more focused on making sure her players are well prepared, and wanting to play more in the future.

"Truthfully, I just want the girls to have fun and show good sportsmanship," Skufca said.

Skufca said the team has put an emphasis on fundamentals like batting, throwing and fielding ground balls.

It paid off, as many of the players from Skufca's team seemed excited to get on the field and put their lessons to use, she said.

"I think my favorite part is the outfield," said Shelby Archuleta, 8. "When the balls are hit hard, they come to me and I can throw them in."

One of Shelby's Mountain West teammates liked the other side of the ball.

"I like when I bat because then I can help my team," said Cerra Skufca, 10.
