Our View: Daily Press committed to Web
March 3, 2010
Change isn't always easy, and it isn't always popular. But we've got to grow with the times.
And the Craig Daily Press is no exception.
In the new world of social networking and instant information, the Daily Press is keeping up — which is especially noteworthy considering the size of the newspaper and this community — and the Editorial Board contends that's exactly what readers should expect from their news source.
At the Daily Press, it is our role and responsibility to get news out quickly and accurately across many platforms.
In this age — the media age — our Web site, http://www.craigdailypress.com, and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are important tools in being effective journalists. And keeping in mind our responsibility to you, our readers, we use those tools to get news to you fast.
If news is shared in a public meeting, you can bet that we will do our best to share that news with our readers — online as well as in print — as quickly and fully as possible. The decision to share information publicly is not our decision — it's the officials' and boards' choice. We simply decide information's newsworthiness and how best to convey that information to readers.
We understand that relaying news via social media sites — which the Daily Press often can utilize immediately — can be uncomfortable for some people in public roles. It may feel intrusive and unsettling to know that the words you say in a public forum can, and many times will, be transmitted to readers within seconds.
But it's good journalism to connect with readers and our community in the way they respond to as quickly as possible. That's the role you count on us to fill every day. And it's one we take seriously.
Now, with Sunshine Week just days away, we celebrate the public's right to know what's happening in public meetings and the media's role in keeping the community informed. We are committed to promoting that notion every day of the year.
And we are committed to doing that as efficiently as possible, and at the moment, social networking sites are a powerful tool to do just that.
