With the winter coming to a close, Delaine Brown and the Yampa Valley OHV Trailriders Club are ready to start hitting the trails.

Brown, the club’s president, said the club will start its second season at 7 p.m. March 15 with a meeting at Moffat County High School.

After the first meeting, every other meeting will be the third Monday of each month at the MCHS library.

“There has been a big interest and a lot of individuals in this area who wanted to put a club together,” Brown said. “A lot of people wanted to start doing some planned activities, so we put the club together last year.”

In the inaugural season, the Trailriders were able to organize more than three trips in areas ranging from the Yellow Jacket area to Sandwash Basin.

“This year, we’ll try to do rides some in the Black Mountain area,” Brown said. “It’s really wherever people want to put the rides together.”

Brown said the trail rides are a chance for families to enjoy the outdoors together.

“This is a family sport,” she said. “We encourage families to participate, with the kids we encourage safe riding.”

Anybody is welcome, and any off-road vehicle — from dirt bikes to side-by-sides to four-wheelers — are permitted.

A large part of the Trailriders’ goal is to maintain the areas where they go for rides, Brown said.

“We try to help keep trails open by helping the forest service,” she said. “We want to maintain the trails.”

Brown said this summer the Trailriders again would try to maintain trails for OHV use.

Another goal of the Trailriders is to help educate new riders about OHVs and ATVs.

“We want to ensure safe and proper riding,” Brown said, “while protecting the countryside.”

The club currently has more than 15 members, and Brown said the Trailriders actively are seeking out more new members.

The rides are usually Sundays and can last all day, Brown said.

“Meet somewhere in town then we all head out,” she said. “We’re usually all back by 5 or 6 p.m.”

There is a membership fee of $25 per person or $30 for a family.

“For the trail rides, there is no charge,” she said. “Anyone who wants to go along is welcome.”
