Martin Gene Walkup


Martin Gene Walkup of Craig died Nov. 16, 2000, at The Memorial Hospital in Craig.

On Dec. 5, 1932, in Vernal, Utah, he was born the son of George W. and Aletha (Slaugh) Walkup. He grew up in the Vernal, Whiterocks and Roosevelt area. He graduated from Alteria High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict serving in both Korea and Germany.

On Aug. 2, 1972, in Craig, he married Elaine Grammer. He worked in the oil fields as a heavy equipment operator and lived in many places before finally settling in Craig in 1988.

He is survived by his wife; son, Jeff (Cheryl) Walkup of Elko, Nev.; step daughter, Diana (Michael) Murphy of Hayden; stepsons, Scott Sumpter of Carlin Nev., Doug (Deanna) Sumpter and Delbert (Pam) Sumpter of Parachute; sisters, Fern Collett of Vernal and Thora (Frank) Yack of Roosevelt; grandchildren, Joshua, Mariah and Marissa Walkup, Michelle Pike, Calvin and Amanda Murphy and Alan Sumpter; great granddaughter, Bailey Pike and mother-in-law, Bernice Grammer of Craig

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Goergia and Wilma and brother, John.

Services were held Nov. 18, 2000, at Grant Mortuary Chapel officiated by Jeff Walkup. Services concluded at the mortuary.
