Don Van Tassel
1919 – 2001
Don Van Tassel, of Craig, died Nov. 29, 2001, at his home. He was 82.
Don was born the son of Earl Sr. and Ella Van Tassel on Oct. 7, 1919, in Craig. He attended Breeze Basin School and Craig High School. He graduated from Craig High School in 1936. He attended Mesa Junior College and Colorado A&M College. He served in the Army Air Corp during WWII in North Africa and Italy.
On Jan. 27, 1946, in Craig, he married Elaine Hampton. Don and Elaine ranched east of Craig. Don was active in Craig Young Farmers & Homemakers, Moffat County and Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, Routt National Forest Advisory Board, Soil Conservation Board, Great Northern and Juniper Dam District Board, Republican Central Committee, served 8 years on the District 5 School Board, and was a member of the Moffat County High School Board. He also served several years as a 4-H beef leader, County Fair Superintendent and was a charter member of the Craig Roping Club. Don loved his family and ranching.
He is survived by his children: Diana ” Lynn” (Jim) Hamilton of Redding, Calif.; Donna (Bob) Sweet of Craig; Doug Van Tassel of Craig; DeLaine (Joe) Brown of Craig; Debbie Van Tassel of Denali Park, Alaska; a brother and sister-in-law, Earl Van Tassel, Jr. and Florence of Craig; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; an aunt, Margie Ponton of Craig; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, mother and father-in-law, and one brother.
Services were held Dec. 4, 2001, at Grant Mortuary Chapel officiated by Bill Lyons. Vocalist and guitarist was John Allen. Musical selection was “Don’t Fence Me In.”
Pallbearers were Jim Hamilton, Jason Hamilton, Bob Sweet, Wylie Sweet, Joe Brown and Travis Brown.
Burial was at the Craig Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Moffat County 4-H Foundation in care of Grant Mortuary.
