Numbers shifting in election registration in Moffat County

The deadline for Moffat County voters to register for the August primary election is Monday.

Stephanie Beckett, a Moffat County elections supervisor, said many voters have expressed the most interest in local politics above state and national interests.

Beckett said she has seen a recent upward trend of voter registration in the last six months, most specifically in the last few weeks.

"It's a pretty noticeable shift of people changing their affiliation from Democrats to Republicans," she said.

Beckett attributes the change in political leanings to county voters wanting to have a say in local government.

All candidates running for positions in Moffat County are running as Republicans, therefore voters must be registered either Republican or unaffiliated to vote for local candidates in the August primary. Unaffiliated voters can change their party affiliation the day of the election.

"I've had about 10 people come in today (Friday) to change their affiliation," she said. "That's the highest I've had, but I've seen about five per day."

Beckett said 88 registered voters had changed their party to Republican, and 33 of them have been Democrats.

"A lot of people go from unaffiliated to one of the parties for the primary and then switch back for the election in November," Beckett said.

With 8,805 registered voters in Moffat County, 205 of them have registered since January.

Beckett said 34 voters registered in the last month, with 18 of them being Republicans, 11 of them unaffiliated and five of them Democrats.

The total voter breakdown for Moffat County follows:

• 4,429 Republicans
