Battle Mountain soccer takes title

Daily Press staff

VAIL — The Moffat County High School boys soccer team could only watch as Battle Mountain celebrated a league title on its home turf Tuesday.

The Huskies made it official with an emphatic 4-0 win over the Bulldogs. Battle Mountain is the best of the Western Slope soccer, winning the league title for the first time since 1992 and its first since the school moved up to 4A in 2000.

“Our defense was still in Craig,” Moffat coach Jeff Hammond said after the game.

“Our offense just couldn’t overcome the speed of their defense.”

The Huskies had nearly twice as many shots on goal as the Bulldogs, 26-14.

Still, Hammond said his team was “fairly upbeat,” following the loss.

“We’re still in good shape as far as playoff aspirations,” Hammond said.

“Battle Mountain is just a challenging place to play. It’s a very good team with a lot of skills and they played a great game.”

If Moffat County wins its remaining two games, it will retain possession of third place in the Western Slope League.

The top four teams advance to the playoffs.

The Bulldogs face Palisade in Craig on Thursday, then travel to Eagle Valley on Saturday.
