Nifty 90s pays tribute to eight Sunset Meadows residents
August 18, 2013
Craig — The days of dancing the Charleston and frequenting speakeasies were back for one night only last week when retirement community Sunset Meadows hosted its annual Nifty 90s party.
The event, held Wednesday night at Sunset Meadows I, celebrates all of its citizens who are age "90 or better," with a collective birthday party, a get-together offered since 1999. This year's theme was the Roaring '20s, reflected in the period decorations, the music provided by the Moffat County High School jazz band and the costumes worn by the guests of honor.
Many of the honorees, all of whom were women, dressed up as flapper girls for the flashback night. The eight women celebrating their 90s were Evelyn Shinn, 90, Marie Switzer, 90, Deloris St. Louis, 94, Ena Peed, 91, Mary Preece, 91, Faye Paulson, 91, Dorothy Murray, 92, and Toni Ayres, 94.
The attendance at the party was 113, with fellow residents, family and community members turning out to celebrate.
"I think that was the best turnout we've ever had at one of these parties," said Ute Jantz, executive director of the Moffat County Housing Authority. "I didn't even know we could hold that many people, but there was room for everyone."
Jantz said she was also glad to see the board of the Housing Authority turn out for the fun.
"The people who are honored at Nifty 90s always appreciate a lot of people coming to see them," she said.
