The world has changed since Scott Cook graduated from Moffat County High School in 1975.

“It used to be you just had to be kind of better than your fellow Americans to get a good job,” said Cook, owner of Cook Chevrolet. “Now you’ve got to be better than everybody in the world.”

In his view, competing on a global level makes high-quality education particularly important now.

Cook is one of several Craig businessmen who are part of a newly formed group called Commitment to Excellence. Its mission: To help improve the local school system.

The group, which has had two meetings so far, includes city and county officials, Moffat County School District administrators and other residents. Daily Press publisher Bryce Jacobson also is part of the group.

Members expressed various views on education in Moffat County and the group’s role in it.

Cook stressed that Commitment to Excellence’s purpose isn’t to fix the Moffat County school system.

“When people say that they’re going to fix something, it usually implies that there’s something broken,” he said. “And I don’t think there’s necessarily anything broken in the school system. We just want to improve it.”

Moffat County Commissioner Audrey Danner, who has attended one of the group’s meetings, said her intent is to support the school district as it’s trying to educate students on a reduced budget.

Looking at improvements may come, she said, “but … I am there to support the school district as a citizen, as a government official and as a community member.”

Darrell Camilletti had a different view.

“(Group members) have a concern about mediocrity and the school system in general,” said Camilletti, a Commitment to Excellence member and managing member of Mountain West Insurance and Financial Services.

The issue, he added, goes beyond what happens in the classroom and extends to athletics and extracurricular activities.

“We’re not at the level the group thinks we’re capable of,” he said. “We want to build a great education system in Moffat County. … And we want to support the administration and the schools in helping them do that.”

The group’s formation is spurring discussions in the community about education, Cook said. He believes that’s a good sign.

“I see nothing but positive, to be honest with you,” he said, adding that with such a broad issue as education, “the only way to improve it is to have everybody in the community involved.”
