— The Moffat County High School boys swim team is not a state contender or a Western Slope Titan this season, but the Bulldogs represented themselves well against Montrose High School in a home dual meet Saturday.

With top swimmer and senior Matt Hulstine out of town, the Bulldogs were not at full strength. The result was a 137-99 victory for Montrose against the smaller Moffat County squad.

Head coach Meghan Francone said there was plenty to be happy about.

"They did well. We had some great performances," Francone said. "Our younger swimmers, they were giving wake-up calls to the older swimmers, letting them know if they don't put in the work, come time for state, they won't be there."

Moffat County sports a young team this season, composed mostly of freshmen and sophomores. Some haven't swam competitively before, Francone said, but they are a team in every sense.

"I did this for condition for basketball," freshman Jesse Kurz said about joining the team. "We're like a family right now, though. None of us are doing it to beat the other guys; we're doing it to push each other."

Kurz took second in the 100-meter backstroke and freestyle at the meet, two of several top finishes for Moffat County. Brenden Carta won the 200-meter freestyle, and Chris Kling took the 100-meter free to give the Bulldogs two victories on the day.

Francone was thankful for Montrose traveling to Moffat County so the Bulldogs could host a meet and was impressed with her swimmers.

"For (the younger swimmers) to be pushing some of our older athletes is phenomenal," she said.

Moffat County swims next April 12 and 13 at Montrose. The team has five more meets before the state competition.
