Moffat County swimming home meet begins late-season push
January 21, 2014
Craig — The state swim meet is supposed to be difficult to qualify for, with only those who can meet lofty time standards earning an invitation to the event in mid-February.
At the Jefferson County Swim and Dive Invitational, the Moffat County girls swim team got a look at just how tough the competition can be. Many of the teams there were 5A schools that the Bulldogs won't compete against at regionals or state, but it was still a new experience for the athletes.
"I think they were a little intimidated at first, when they were looking at the psych sheets,” or meet previews, coach Anita Reynolds said. "But once they got into the pool and got going, they did really well."
The Bulldogs did not have an individual or relay team place in the top 20 at the meet, meaning there were no qualifiers for the finals, which take the top 16.
Those results came despite members of the Moffat County team swimming some great times.
Kaylee Durham took 15 seconds off her best 100-yard freestyle time of the year, finishing in 1:15.50. Alex Samuelson took less than 30 seconds in the 50 free.

"It was a great meet for our girls," Reynolds said.
But in terms of qualifying for state, every Bulldog still has work to do. Samuelson is just less than three seconds shy of qualifying in the 50 free while both 200-yard relay teams (freestyle and medley) would need to drop about 10 seconds from their JeffCo times to meet the standard.
They have three more chances to do that starting Friday at the team's lone home meet. After a home meet scheduled in December was canceled because of the weather, Moffat County will host Glenwood Springs, Aspen and Summit at 3 p.m. in Craig.
"It's a big meet for us," coach Meghan Francone said. "Our advantage will be that our pool is a meter pool, where most of our opponents will have been swimming yards. We hope to have the home advantage of our fans being out there, too."
