Moffat County swim team dives in
March 9, 2010
Any expectations Moffat County High School boys varsity swimming coach Meghan Francone had for her team heading into the first meet of the year might need to be raised.
The team narrowly missed qualifying for the state meet in its medley relay, and freshman Matt Hulstine missed making the state meet in the 200-meter individual medley by seconds Saturday in Montrose.
"They definitely met my expectations," Francone said. "I'm excited for this weekend."
The team will swim Friday at the league relays at Mesa State College in Grand Junction in a pool that Francone said produces good times.
"It's a fast pool," she said. "I think they will swim well in the medley."
The bad news for the Bulldogs' competition is that MCHS isn't in midseason form yet, Francone said.

"This year, all of our swimmers have had to step it up," she said. "We have incredible swimmers — they all have a lot of potential."
Aaron Byram finished third in the 100-meter backstroke, and Francone said seniors Nick Glispy and Curt Ellgen both swam well in their first action of the season.
For Hulstine, who has spent his summers logging laps with the Craig Sea Sharks swim team, it was his first competition in a high school event.
The experience didn't disappoint, he said.
He finished first in the 200-meter breaststroke.
"I had swam against some of the same people in the summer," he said. "There were some other kids who only swim in high school, and there were some good kids there."
Hulstine, who hopes to advance to state in the 100-meter breaststroke and 200-meter individual medley, said his weekend performance only bolstered his end-of-season goals.
"I'd like to make it to state," he said, "and just go from there."
