Moffat County Sheriff Tim Jantz will not run for Moffat County Commissioner in the November election.
He posted an inquiry on his Facebook page earlier this month, asking people why they think he should run for commissioner. While he said he was "overwhelmed" by the show of support from his friends and the community, Jantz said he is opting out.
The choice was personal and professional. He loves law enforcement too much to leave it just yet, he said.
"I am deeply honored by people in Moffat County," he said.
Jantz's wife, Ute Jantz, helped him make the tough decision.
"My advice to him (was) to follow his heart and his passions," she said. "I told him I would support him in whatever decision he would make."
Jantz consulted his pastors, friends and colleagues for their input. He was appreciative of the support he received but ultimately decided he wanted to continue to work in law enforcement.
"I don't believe at this time …it's right for me to be a commissioner," he said.
But, Jantz said he was proud to serve out his term as sheriff for Moffat County.
"I've been blessed by being sheriff," he said. "I hope that I've done (residents) a good job."
Ute Jantz expressed her pride in her husband's decision to stick with law enforcement.
"He'd be a very good commissioner, no doubt about it. It took him a while to mull it over. He gave it very thorough thought. I'm proud of him," she said. Jantz "lives (and) breathes law enforcement. He is 24/7 on call."
While not sure what his future will hold, Jantz intends to stick with his current profession.
"I'm not ready to give up my chosen career," he said.
