Moffat County School District to bid out insurance contract

Craig — With nearly 10 percent less state funding, the Moffat County School District is busy planning for upcoming budget cuts amounting to more than $1 million.
But decreasing revenue will not be the only issue for the 2010-11 fiscal year.
On the expense side, rising insurance premiums could cost the district more than $500,000 more to provide benefits to its staff next year, district finance director Mark Rydberg said.
At the monthly school board meeting Jan. 28, Rydberg presented to the board a request for bids for next year's insurance contract.
The board approved, 7-0, the request for proposal, and Rydberg will move forward with the process of trying to find a better deal.
The district employs more than 300 people and provides benefits packages to licensed staff working more than 20 hours a week, full-time year-round employees and those who work more than 30 hours a week during the school year, according to the request for proposal document.
About 290 employees currently are qualified for the benefits, which include medical and dental insurance, voluntary vision insurance and life insurance.
The contract will be for one year with four additional one-year renewal options, according to the request for proposal.
The document also included a list of potential vendors, which includes two local insurance providers and three from around the state.
Bid packets are due to the school district by 4 p.m. Feb. 22.
