Perhaps to the disappointment of students eager to forget about school for the summer break, next year’s school schedule has been released.

The 2017-18 Academic Calendar has been finalized and is available on the school district website.

Highlights:

  • Students will start back to school August 28.
  • Thanksgiving holiday for students is a full week from November 20 through 24.
  • The Christmas holiday break is December 25 through January 8.
  • Spring break is March 19 through 23.
  • The academic calendar still ends prior to Memorial Day.
  • Secondary schools will have four days throughout the year for professional development.
  • Elementary schools will have six days throughout the year for professional development and teacher work time.
  • Students will no longer be released early on Friday afternoons.

“This time has been recaptured in the form of full-day professional development as well as teacher work time at the elementary level,” stated Superintendent Dave Ulrich in his monthly message available on the district webpage.

School board members had expressed a desire to increase student contact hours without lengthening the school year or school day.

“I am happy to report this will increase instructional time by two days in the elementary schools and four days at the secondary level,” Ulrich stated in his message.

Elementary schools will be adopting a new reading program and were given additional time for training.

“I believe this calendar is a great reflection of the commitment to improving teacher practice while maximizing instruction time,” Ulrich stated in his message.
