Moffat County rallies to win in state consolation bracket

A day after the disappointing end to their hopes of a state championship, the Moffat County boys basketball team bounced back.

In similar fashion to the way Colorado Academy beat Moffat on Thursday, MCHS came from behind to beat Manitou Springs Friday, 63-59. After trailing for almost the entire game to a hot-shooting Mustangs team, the Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run to end the game and earn a shot at fifth place in the state.

Tyler Davis scored 15 points and hit the game-tying 3-pointer with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter, while Javen Gumber added 15 points of his own and was dominant inside for Moffat County.

Manitou Springs shot poorly in its quarterfinal loss to Faith Christian but lit it up from beyond the arc Friday. James Finsterwald sunk seven threes and scored 25 points, as the Mustangs' 12 3s in the game kept them ahead most of the way.

The Bulldogs trailed by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter but hung around and started fouling with two minutes remaining as the Mustangs were content to hold onto the ball and run down the clock. Despite its 3-point shooting, Manitou had some costly misses from the line, which Moffat County took advantage of.

Kort Hathhorn came out of a quiet offensive game to hit two threes in the fourth quarter and help pull Moffat within 59-56. Mick Prather missed a pair of free throws and Davis buried a three on the other end, his second of the quarter to tie the game.
