The winter months are often the most difficult to maintain Colorado’s blood supply due to poor weather and road conditions and cold and flu season.

Bonfils Blood Center provides blood and blood products to nearly 200 hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the Colorado and beyond and needs nearly 3,000 people to donate blood every week to meet the needs of the community and be prepared for any unforeseen events.

Cardboard box derby slated

Wyman’s 6th annual cardboard box derby is set for 11 a.m. on Feb. 16 at Wyman Museum, 94350 E. U.S. Highway 40.

Be creative and make a sled out of cardboard. Prizes will be awarded for most creative, people’s choice and fastest sled.

Sleds need to be registered and in the staging area by 11 a.m., judging is at 1 p.m., followed by racing to award the fastest sled.

Ice fishing derby planned

Wyman’s 2nd annual ice fishing derby is slated for 1 to 3 p.m. on Feb. 16 at Wyman Museum, 94350 E. U.S. Highway 40.

The event is for children ages 16 and younger.

D.O.W. will provide fishing poles and holes in the ice. Prizes will be awarded.

BLM reminds residents about Emerald closures

The Bureau of Land Management is reminding people to comply with seasonal closures at Emerald Mountain near Steamboat Springs.

The closures are in place to protect wintering and calving elk, according to a Little Snake Field Office news release.

All areas south of the Ridge Trail in BLM’s Emerald Mountain Special Recreation Area are closed to human entry from Dec. 1 to June 30.

The closure includes the Beall Trail and Kemray Draw, as well as Colorado Parks and Wildlife lands to the east and the Humble Ranch property located southeast of the Emerald Mountain recreation area.

“We are seeing a number of violations of this closure this winter, which could have significant impact on the elk in this area,” said BLM Little Snake Field Manager Wendy Reynolds in the release. “However, the Ridge and Rotary Trails remain open year-round for those wishing to visit Emerald Mountain before July 1.”

Violators of the closure face citations and a minimum $175 fine.

State Senator Baumgardner and State Representative Bob Rankin will host a meet and greet from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 at the Meeker Cafe, 560 Main St. in Meeker.

Father/Daughter Ball planned

The 2013 Father Daughter Ball will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 15, at the Craig Christian Church, 960 W. Victory Way.

Colorado First Conservation District meeting set

The annual meeting of the Colorado First Conservation District and Mineral and Surface Rights Workshop will be at 6 p.m. on Feb. 19 at the Moffat County Fairgrounds Pavilion.

All landowners are encouraged to attend. The meal will be potluck with the district providing table service, meat and drinks.

There will be awards and drawings for prizes. Dan Davison will address mineral rights issues and Jeff Comstock will speak about surface rights.

Local bands plan concert

The band Beyond the Wreckage will perform a concert at 5 p.m. on Feb. 22, at the Fairgrounds Pavilion in Craig.

Other bands also performing are Biological Meltdown, Alcaeus, Decretum, and ICO.

Conservation district taking tree orders

The Colorado First Conservation District is taking orders for seedling trees.

The trees will arrive the last week of April. The average cost of each tree or shrub is less than $1.

A wide variety of plants are available to plant this spring but species are limited. Residents are encouraged to order early.

Residents must own an acre of land or more to participate. Order forms are available at the BLM, CSU Ext. Office or the district office at 145 Commerce St.

The deadline for submissions to be included in the 2013 edition of CNCC’s “Waving Hands Review” is March 1.

The Audio Information Network of Colorado is now providing listeners with audio access to the Craig Daily Press and nearly 100 other Colorado newspapers, ad circulars and magazines.

The Audio Information Network provides services to the blind, visually impaired and print disabled individuals with programming available in both English and Spanish.

Listeners may access AINC programming via telephone, broadcast on a digital receiver, Podcast or live streaming on AINC’s website at no cost.

VNA Tai Chi slated

CSP Academy applicant sought

Colorado State Patrol is seeking applicants for the 2013 Youth Academy.

This year’s academy will take place from June 9-15, 2013, in Golden.

The goal of the Youth Academy is to assist in the development of future leaders for the State of Colorado. It is mentally and physically demanding and is provided at no cost to the participants.

Some basic requirements are:

• Be at least 16 years old and a high school student

• Be a Colorado resident

• Have a valid Colorado driver’s license

• Minimum GPA of 2.0

• Proof of medical insurance and have a doctor’s certification of ability to participate

• Agree to a criminal and driver history check

• Present two letters of recommendation

• Complete an interview at the local CSP Troop office

It is limited to 40 participants and the application deadline is March 8.

Women’s Wellness Connection offering cervical health test

Coming on the heels of Cervical Health Awareness Month, Women’s Wellness Connection would like to remind and encourage women to talk with their healthcare providers about scheduling a pap test.

A pap test is the first line of defense against cervical cancer, which has a survival rate of more than 92 percent when diagnosed early enough, according to a news release from women’s Wellness Connection.

Without a pap test cervical cancer is hard to detect as it doesn’t have any signs or symptoms.

The release said under health care reform insurance plans are required to cover women’s preventive health services, like pap tests, without charging co-pays.

The Women’s Wellness Connection offers free cervical cancer screenings and necessary follow up treatments to Colorado women between the ages of 40-64 who have little or no health insurance and meet income requirements. Parenting class set

Moffat County Department of Social Services and Connections 4 Kids, the early childhood council serving Moffat and Rio Blanco counties, are offering the six-week class Parenting the Love and Logic Way.

Charity Resier and Michelle Balleck will facilitate the class. The class will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays from Jan. 15, to Feb. 19, at Moffat County Department of Social Services, 595 Breeze St., Craig.

The class is offered free of charge to parents and educators of children of all ages. Educators who attend the class can receive continuing education hours.

Yampa Valley Partners launch carpool-matching service

Residents of Moffat, Rio Blanco and Routt counties now have access to a free, online carpool matching service sponsored by the nonprofit Yampa Valley Data Partners in cooperation with the three counties.

Commuters may find regular carpool partners or a car share for a one-time trip by registering on the website with a valid email address.

Organizers hope the website will help residents save on personal transportation costs and do their part to reduce fuel use and vehicle pollution.

Low-cost immunizations offered

VNA is offering $14 adult immunizations, vaccine

Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is offering $14 immunizations for adults who are uninsured/underinsured including measles, mumps, rubella, HPV, chicken pox, pneumonia, meningitis, tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough and hepatitis A and B.

The VNA also is offering a vaccine for shingles. Adults ages 60 and older who are low income and uninsured may qualify to receive the vaccine for a $14 fee through the Merck Patient Vaccine Assistance Program.

Apply for the program by scheduling an appointment.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other leading medical groups recommend being vaccinated against meningitis for youths ages 11 to 18 as well as those ages 19 to 21 who attend college.

College students younger than 22 who received a vaccine before age 16 should receive a booster.

MCHS Swimming Pool open to public

The Moffat County High School Swimming Pool is now open for public swimming.

Lap swimming is Monday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Recreational swimming is Monday through Thursday from 7 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Daily admission is $4.00 for adults and $3.00 for students. Season and punch passes are also available.

Peabody Energy Leaders in Education program is accepting nominations for education professionals who inspire students to succeed.

A committee of educators and business leaders chooses winners to receive a $1,000 award throughout the school year.

They began accepting nominations past August and will continue to accept them throughout the 2012-2013 school year.

Any employee of a public or private school working with K-12 students and has worked in education for the last three years is eligible.

A single, Educator of the Year, will be chosen by the judging committee and will receive an additional $5,000 award.

CASA volunteers sought

Northwest Rocky Mountain Court Appointed Special Advocates is now recruiting volunteers to become advocates in court for abused and neglected children in Routt, Moffat and Grand Counties.

Training begins in October and applications are available online at http://www.nwrmcasa.org.

CASA provides abused children a voice in court to assist in assuring all children are placed in a safe, permanent home and that their social, emotional, educational and medical needs are met.

CASA provides needed information to judges and coordinate with parties in a case with emphasis on the child’s needs.

To become a CASA volunteer, a person must be passionate about helping children and a good communicator. 32 hours of training is required and interested individuals must complete an application and interview.
