Moffat County girls golf shoots well at Yampa Valley Golf Course

The Moffat County High School girls golf team closed out its regular season on a high note with two tournaments on the Western Slope this week.

The Bulldogs hosted a home tournament at Yampa Valley Golf Course on Monday, with golfers from Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs, Rifle and Palisade competing. In the best-ball pairs tournament format, the top two from MCHS showed they can play with the big competition from the Western Slope.

Caitlin Harjes and Katelyn Peroulis, both sophomores, teamed up to shoot an 84 at YVGC, the second-best score of the day.

"We played really well together," Harjes said. "It was fun, and we just worked together well."

The golfers encountered excellent weather for the first half of their rounds Monday before gusty winds made the proceedings more interesting. In Craig, though, strong winds are not uncommon on the course.

"(The wind) made it a little tougher," Peroulis said. "You're not always sure your shot is going to the right spot."

The Bulldogs also got strong performances from their other two teams. Alex Bulla and Shianna Dockins combined for a 103, while Brittany Corey and Lexi Gonzalez shot 120. Head coach Ann Marie Roberts liked what she saw.

"They're playing better, they are all improving every day," Roberts said. "Our three and four players shot about where they've been lately, but everybody else had a good day today."

Good rounds aside, the Bulldogs were excited to play in Craig on a course they are more accustomed to, as well as playing in front of family.

"It felt nice because I didn't have to ask questions, making sure I was shooting in the right direction," Harjes said. "And you get to have people watching you play and cheering you on that don't get to watch much during the season."

Roberts likes the way her team is hitting the ball, but she said if they can make strides in the short game by regionals, they will really turn a corner. The regional tournament takes place May 7 and 8 at River Valley Ranch in Aspen.
