Craig — With its defense working and the long-ball dropping through the hoop, Moffat County boys basketball played a complete game Monday against an overmatched opponent.
The team hit seven 3-point shots — including three in a row in the second quarter — to dispatch Olathe, 88-31. Tyler Davis had four 3s of his own and led the Bulldogs with 22 points, while Javen Gumber, Joe Camilletti and Taft Cleverly all broke into double-figure scoring, as well.
Moffat County expected to get a win against Olathe, which still is looking for its first victory of the season, but wanted to play a complete game in the process. Head coach Eric Hamilton liked what he saw Monday night.
"I thought we played well for four quarters," he said. "In a game like that, it's tough to get better, but I did think we maintained our intensity the whole way and played a good game."
Olathe struggled against Moffat County's pressure defense, especially in the second and third quarters. The Bulldogs poured in 18 points in a three-minute stretch to start the second quarter, then scored 33 in the third by forcing turnovers on several consecutive possessions.
"We set a goal before the game of holding them to 25 points," sophomore Kody Fief said. "I think that put it in our minds to really get after them on defense."
The Bulldogs are now 10-2 on the season and 8-1 in the Western Slope League, still a game behind league-leading Aspen. They will have a chance to tie the Skiers in a game Feb. 11 in Craig but first have to take on Basalt this weekend.
"We're trying to go game by game," Fief said. "We want to keep showing people what we're capable of every single week."
