MCHS wrestling team heads to tournament play

Tom Schafer

The varsity wrestling team will travel to the Monarch Tournament in Louisville, Colo., to compete in nine duel matches in two days.

“The kids should be beat up when it’s over,” Head Coach Roman Gutierrez said. “But they will have quality mat time and have wrestled quality kids.”

The Bulldogs will wrestle Paonia, the best 5A team in the state, in their last duel Saturday evening. Paonia has a 125-pound weight class wrestler who is 103-0, and they have four other players who have placed at the state meet, the coach said.

The ‘Dogs will compete against several teams with good individual players, such as Columbine, which has a few good wrestlers; Thompson, which won the Steamboat tournament, and Paonia, a real powerhouse, the coach said.

“It will take some good play to beat Paonia,” he added.

According to Coach Gutierrez, the ‘Dogs won’t change anything, but will wrestle using the things that got them to where they are now.

“They have never seen these teams, so we won’t know what to expect,” he said.
