In his first action since injuring his forearm, Moffat County High School wrestler Nathan Tomlin was told to stretch out his Friday night dual.

Wrestling against Meeker High School's Pat Love, Tomlin couldn't resist the urge to show that he was back at almost full strength.

"It was just another match," he said. "There was nothing really different, but my plan was to play with him into the third periods to get conditioned.

"My plan was just to take him down and let him up. But I just pinned him."

Tomlin was just one of 10 Moffat County victors Friday night in Meeker.

Nick Chew, Charlie Griffiths, Cody Adams, Ben Winslow and Jacob Teeter won their matches, while Garrett and Todd Stewart, Jacob Blevins and Cody Nelson won by forfeit against the Meeker Cowboys.

Freshmen Jacob Teeter had a new experience on the mat Friday.

"I've never wrestled a girl, so I didn't know what to expect," he said of his exhibition bout with Meeker's Cody Mae Pfau. "She was tough, she was also a weight below me. It would have been bad if I lost."

Charlie Griffiths was able to dispatch Meeker's Logan Piper in the first round.

"I thought it was pretty good," he said of his match. "I was going for a quick pin, but I slipped my twister — I was a little high up on the neck.

Then, I just put him in a chicken wing and finished him off."

For the 145-pounder, Meeker was another step towards postseason play.

"I'm making sure I get ready for regionals," he said. "I need to be winning it this year. For me, this was another match I could wrestle for a little more experience."

Cody Adams took the award for fastest pin of the night as he defeated Meeker's Ethan Overton in 35 seconds.

"He gave the headlock to me, and I pinned him," Adams said.

This late into the season, Adams said he was thinking about the Feb. 12 regional meet.

"It's going to be a tough tournament," he said. "Last year, I placed sixth. This year, in 189s, if I can get to second or third, so I can go to state, would be awesome."

Moffat County coach Roman Gutierrez said his team looked like it was getting into shape weeks before the regional tournament.

"I thought we wrestled really well," he said. "Both we and Meeker are a little short handed."

Senior Scott Mann was involved in a battle with Meeker's Justin Hardy, who eventually was able to pin Mann.

"I thought Scott was wrestling really well, but he got caught," Gutierrez said. "Hardy, since junior high, has had a really good headlock."

Meeker and Moffat County share a number of similarities — Meeker's coach, Joe Gutierrez, is Roman's brother.

"We're in the same boat they are," Roman said about the Cowboys. "Most of their kids are really young. They have one senior, so they'll be ready in a couple of years."

Moffat County wasn't the only school representing the Yampa Valley in Meeker, as Hayden High School won several of its matches.

"We only had a few matches, but the kids looked good," Hayden coach Ty Camilletti said. "They are right where they need to be."

The match of the night featured Hayden's 171-pound wrestler, Kolton Miller, matched up against Meeker's JR Crawford.

"He won that triple overtime and he's been battling some sickness and a knee injury," Camilletti said. "He didn't look as good as he normally does, but he'll bounce back."

Hayden's Treyben Letlow and T-Lane Mazzola also were winners on the night.

"Overall, I'm pleased," Camilletti said. "We looked good, and they are picking up on stuff in the practice room."

With only two seniors, Camilletti said the Tigers show promise for the future, as well.

"We're a little on the young side," he said. "But this team is going to be tough. We're doing well as a team, and we get most everybody back for next year. We're doing well this year. These kids have stepped it up at a young age."
