MCHS volleyball splits at Regis Jesuit

Sandy Camilletti, Moffat County High School volleyball coach, said she was pleased with how her team played in its first tournament of the season, her first as head coach.

The MCHS girls varsity volleyball team played Sept. 3 and 4 at the Regis Jesuit tournament in Aurora, where it finished with a 2-2 record against four larger schools.

"The girls did well and they worked hard," Camilletti said. "It was a good way to start the season."

On Friday, the Bulldogs (2-2 overall, 0-0 in the Western Slope League) beat George Washington High School in five sets, then defeated Fort Lupton in three.

On Saturday, MCHS lost a tight match against Castle View, 3-1, before falling to Bear Creek, 3-0.

All the schools MCHS played were in a larger class.

George Washington High School competes in the 5A/4A Denver Metro League, Fort Lupton competes in the 5A/4A East Metro League, Castle View competes in the 5A Continental League and Bear Creek competes in the 5A Jeffco League.

The team's first loss came to a talented Castle View team.

"Castle View had some really good hitters," Camilletti said. "That just showed us something we need to work on."

Camilletti said the team would continue to work on its footwork and serve-receive skills.

But, despite not playing since last fall, the team looked sharp at times, Camilletti said.

"I was pleased with how well they played as a team," she said. "I was happy with the weekend. They were playing faster than they did a year ago."

Before the team plays at 5 p.m. Thursday in Grand Junction, the team will try to implement some changes, Camilletti said.

"We can't get our offense going if we can't pass the ball to our setter," she said. "We need to have better blocks, too."

Notes: The MCHS junior varsity volleyball team went to the Montrose tournament Friday and Saturday and finished with one win and three losses. The freshmen team traveled to Palisade and split four games.
